The 5 Most Effective Fertility Tests

After a couple has tried to conceive for one year without success, fertility testing is commonly recommended to discover the root cause of the problem. This designation is only the beginning of a couple’s fertility journey. To identify the cause of infertility, a number of diagnostic tests may be performed.

Fertility Tests

  • Semen Analysis – In order to fertilize an egg, a man’s sperm must be analyzed.  Using a semen sample, quantity and motility of sperm can be evaluated to determine if a man is fertile.
  • Physical Exam – The first step in the diagnostic process for women is a physical exam. This often includes a pelvic exam. This is to rule out issues such as thyroid disorders and other health concerns.
  • Blood Work – Hormones play an important role in the reproductive system of women. In order to determine if a woman’s hormone levels are normal, blood work is required. This blood work is performed at various times within a woman’s cycle to ensure her body is reacting as it should.
  • Ultrasound – An ultrasound provides insight on a number of aspects of a woman’s cycle including the thickness of her uterine lining, the number of eggs that are maturing for ovulation, and the helath of her uterine cavity.
  • Hysterosalpinogram – During this test, your doctor examines your reproductive organs using an x-ray. Then, a special dye is injected into the uterine cavity. This procedure allows doctors to know if there are any abnormalities in the uterus and to verify that the fallopian tubes are open and unobstructed.
