Vitamins to Take to Improve Chances of a Healthy Pregnancy

Nutrition is one of the biggest factors in having a healthy pregnancy.  It is important to eat well balanced meals that are rich in fruits and vegetables.  Unfortunately, getting adequate levels of all of the vitamins you need can be difficulty with diet alone.  Taking vitamins to improve chances of healthy pregnancy is something that every woman should consider.

Getting Adequate Nutrition2015-3-16

The single most important thing you can do is to eat balanced meals.  Try to limit empty calories from soft drinks and processed foods.  Additionally, take a prenatal vitamin daily to ensure you’re getting the necessary amounts of all vitamins:

  • Begin taking prenatal vitamins while you’re trying to conceive, as it can help prepare the body for pregnancy.
  • Some women, particularly in early pregnancy, may have a tough time eating and taking medicine.  Taking the vitamin before bed can allow you to sleep through some episodes of morning sickness.
  • Ensure the vitamins you are taking are labeled as prenatal as that will ensure adequate amounts of Folic Acid and Calcium.

Your doctor may prescribe additional vitamins based on your medical needs or have a diet that does not allow you to eat certain food.

Most Important Nutrients

Certain vitamins are crucial during pregnancy.  Look for a prenatal vitamin that includes:

  • Folic Acid – Every cell in your body needs Folic Acid in order to grow.  This is especially true for the early development.  Folic Acid deficiencies have been linked to a number of health issues.
  • Iron – Iron aids in the process of producing hemoglobin, a substance which allows the blood to carry oxygen. A woman’s body needs double the amount of iron while she is pregnant.
  • Calcium – Calcium is necessary for keeping your bones strong and helping your baby’s bones develop.
