How Summer Sunshine Can Boost Fertility

Vitamin D plays a large role in the fertility of both men and women.  In fact, being vitamin D deficient can reduce hormone levels, sperm production, and ovulation.  While vitamin D is found in food, the primary way humans receive the important vitamin is through sunlight.  For many individuals who do not spend large amounts of time outdoors, or who live in the northern part of the country, getting sufficient sunlight for vitamin D production may be difficult.

Vitamin D is crucial for the reproductive health of both men and women.  Women produce larger amounts of progesterone and estrogen when they have adequate levels of the vitamin.  This works to regulate a woman’s menstrual cycle and to improve ovulation.  In men, vitamin D has the same effect on testosterone which impacts a man’s libido. Additionally, vitamin D is important for the formation of sperm.

Obtaining Vitamin D

Though vitamin D may be found in a number of foods including fortified milk, cereal, fish, and eggs, the amount we take in through food is not sufficient.  The majority of the vitamin D needed by the human body is produced chemically when sunlight is absorbed by the skin.  This association between sunlight and fertility may be why pregnancy rates are often higher in the summer months, as this is when people are most likely receiving adequate sun exposure.

Sunshine and Fertility

Getting extra sunlight can help enhance your fertility.  Making an effort to spend time outdoors can give you the edge you need in your fertility journey.  Taking walks outside, a trip to the beach, and working in a garden can all provide additional time in the sun.  While getting additional sunlight is good, it is important to continue to take precautions to protect yourself from sunburn during the process.
