Spending Time Outdoors and The Beneficial Effects on Fertility

One of the best ways to address fertility issues is to identify and then treat the root cause of the concern.  In many cases, seemingly small issues can result in difficulty conceiving.  In fact, spending time outdoors and fertility may be directly related.

Vitamin D and Fertility3.22-1

Vitamin D is an essential part of every woman’s nutrition.  Generally, vitamin D is received in two ways, through the food we eat and through sunlight. As our lifestyles have changed over the past two decades, women are spending less time outdoors.  Because of this, the number of women who are vitamin D deficient has doubled. In fact, roughly 40 percent of women in their reproductive years have a vitamin D deficiency.

Vitamin D is extremely important for a woman’s reproductive health.  The uterus and ovaries have receptors for vitamin D. When vitamin D is not present at adequate levels, women are less likely to become pregnant, even when undergoing fertility treatment.  Luckily, spending time outdoors and fertility improvement are directly related.

Spending Time Outdoors

Spending time outdoors has a number of positive effects on fertility:

  • One of the best ways to increase vitamin D levels is through additional exposure to sunlight. Spending time outdoors allows your body to absorb additional vitamin D, which can improve a woman’s overall fertility and likelihood of becoming pregnant.
  • Fertility care can be stressful. Unfortunately, that same stress can negatively impact fertility. Spending time outdoors can provide the outlet you need to relieve stress without engaging in unhealthy habits.
  • Quality time and open communication with your partner are especially important during fertility treatment.  Time spent outdoors together provides quality time as well as an opportunity to openly discuss your feelings.
  • Exercising regularly is important for overall health.  Taking your workouts outdoors can provide some much needed variety and keep you focused on your fitness goals.
