Important Lifestyle Changes to Improve Sperm Count and Fertility

Sperm count is one of the most important measurements of a man’s fertility.  The higher the sperm count the more likely a couple is to conceive.  Many men are unaware that their lifestyle can directly impact their fertility.  Making lifestyle changes can improve sperm count and fertility holistically and increase your chances of becoming pregnant.

The most important factor in the health of your sperm is your overall health.  This includes being screened for and treating any STDs.  STDs, particularly chlamydia and gonorrhea, can drastically reduce a man’s fertility.  Practicing safe sex can improve reproductive health.   Additionally, it is important to have an annual physical in order to identify and address health issues as they arise.

Eating a well-balanced diet is a great way to improve reproductive health.  Look to incorporate a number of fruits and vegetables.  Additionally, foods that are rich in antioxidants are good selections as they are shown to have a direct impact on fertility.

Maintaining a healthy weight is key to sperm health.  Being overweight or obese can reduce sperm production resulting in a low sperm count.  Additionally, being overweight can impact the ability of a sperm to move correctly, or its motility.  While it may not be easy, getting to and maintaining a healthy weight can improve sperm count and fertility.

Your emotional health can have just as large an impact on your fertility as your physical health.  High stress levels can impact your fertility.  While trying to improve fertility, it is important to engage in healthy behaviors to manage stress.

Exercise improves health in a number of ways.  Becoming more active can increase blood flow to your reproductive organs. Additionally, exercise improves overall health, can help you reduce your weight and manage stress levels.
