Acupuncture for Infertility: How Does It Work?

Holistic medicine has been used throughout the world for centuries to treat a number of ailments.  Recently, fertility experts have begun to prescribe acupuncture as a holistic means to treat infertility. Acupuncture can enhance your fertility without the use of fertility medication or any of the associated side effects.

Acupuncture is an ancient method of treating pain and illness through the use of small needles.  A acupuncturist inserts small needles into the skin and tissues.  Practitioners believe that the needles are able to change the flow of energy within a person’s body.  By changing the flow of energy within a body, acupuncture is able to address physical, emotional and mental issues.

How does acupuncture aid fertility?

Research clearly shows a link between acupuncture and increasing fertility.  In 2002, a published study showed a marked difference in success rates between women who received acupuncture during IVF and women who did not receive that treatment.  34 pregnancies resulted in the 80 women who used acupuncture vs. 21 pregnancies in the group of women who did not receive acupuncture.

Experts differ in how they explain this increase.  Some experts believe that acupuncture can stimulate egg production.  Other experts believe that acupuncture’s ability to improve a person’s energy and well-being results in an increase in endorphins.  The resulting endorphins in turn, increase fertility.

When should acupuncture be done during a cycle?

It is important to choose an acupuncturist that is affiliated with, or recommended by, your fertility center.  This helps to ensure that your medical team and acupuncturists are on track and are coordinating treatment.  Working together, the two medical professionals are best equipped to advise you when acupuncture should be done.  Be sure to speak with your fertility care team before using acupuncture to enhance your fertility.  Additionally, confer with your fertility care team before taking any herbs that are prescribed by your acupuncturist as they may interfere with your medication.
