Negative Pregnancy Tests - How To Cope and What's Next?

When you’re trying to get pregnant, negative pregnancy tests are your worst nightmare.  For two weeks you’ve waited in anticipation for the positive result that means you’re family is growing.  Maybe you’ve even allowed yourself to dream a little, to figure out your due date or to think of names.  While they can be difficult to cope with, negative pregnancy tests are not the end of the world.  Knowing what’s next can help you continue on in your journey to become pregnant.

It’s Okay to Feel2015-6

To others who have not gone through the process, it may seem silly to mourn something that never existed.  However, the sadness you feel after a cycle where you did not get pregnant is real and should be acknowledged.  Give yourself time to adjust and regroup.  However, keep in mind that negative pregnancy tests do not mean that you’ll never get pregnant - just that you aren’t pregnant this time.  If you’ve tried to get pregnant for more than six months – or feel as though you should be pregnant by now – it may be time to speak with a fertility expert.

When to Seek Help

Many women have a hard time deciding that it is time for professional assistance starting a family.  The truth is, if there is a medical reason that is preventing you from becoming pregnant, it is important to address the issue sooner rather than later.  Additionally, if the thing that has been delaying your pregnancy is a simple issue such as timing, your fertility care team can provide that detail for you as well.  World class fertility centers don’t begin treatment until they have a full understanding of your needs – even if that need is just timed ovulation.

In order to start the process, you will undergo testing that includes blood work, ultrasound and diagnostic tests.  The results of these tests are then used to create your treatment care plan that is tailored to your exact needs.
