Basic Facts About Ovarian Rejuvenation Therapy

Older Woman Pregnant-1All older women – even menopausal women – have egg follicles in their ovaries. These eggs are dormant and don’t grow because their environment for development is not optimal. This occurs when a woman’s rigid ovarian wall pushes on follicles and keeps them dormant. When a woman is unable to ovulated, Ovarian Rejuvenation Therapy is an innovative Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) can coax her ovaries into producing viable eggs for fertilization. At New Hope Fertility Center, fertility specialist – Dr. Zaher Merhi – has achieved phenomenal pregnancy success using Ovarian Rejuvenation Therapy.

Ovarian Rejuvenation Therapy

Ovarian Rejuvenation Therapy may be recommended when:

  • A woman’s egg follicles cannot be seen on an ultrasound; or
  • A woman’s body is not responding to fertility medications administered during IVF

At New Hope Fertility Center, Ovarian Rejuvenation Therapy is performed in a non-invasive manner compared to other techniques currently being used by other clinics.

Here, Ovarian Rejuvenation Therapy is similar to an IVF egg retrieval procedure and is performed in office:

  • A woman’s ovaries are punctured multiple times transvaginally
  • Pressure on egg follicles is relieved from the rigid ovarian wall
  • Dormant eggs are revived and freed from follicles

Premature Ovarian Failure (POF)

Some younger women – under 40 – suffer from Premature Ovarian Failure (POF) and are unable to mature and ovulate eggs. POF is a condition diagnosed when a women stops having her period for more than a year.

Women suffering from POF have:

  • A very high Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) level
  • A very low Anti Mullerian Hormone (AMH) level

Women suffering from POF have between a 5 and 10 percent chance of conceiving naturally every month.

Effects of Aging on a Woman’s Ovarian Reserve

As a woman’s ovaries age, they are unable to produce the hormones that stimulate egg follicles to develop and make them reach a viable stage of development.

  • A women is born with all the eggs she will produce in her lifetime – approximately one to two million
  • By puberty, a young woman will have approximately 300,000 eggs when she starts her regular, monthly menstrual cycle
  • Each month, a woman will ovulate one egg while at the same time losing 10 to 15 eggs
  • A woman’s egg reserve will continue to be used up every month until she reaches menopause
  • A woman’s remaining egg follicles may not develop and will remain in a dormant stage inside the ovaries – even after menopause
  • A woman’s peak fertility years are in her 20s to mid-30s
  • Women in their peak fertility years have a 20 percent chance of pregnancy every month
  • A woman’s fertility level begins to decline after 30 and there is a precipitous drop after she turns 35
  • Women over 40 only have about a 5 percent chance of getting pregnant during any given month
  • About one percent of all women experience Premature Ovarian Failure (POF) when their ovaries stop functioning before they are 40
  • As a woman’s ovaries age, they are unable to produce the hormones that stimulate follicles to develop and make them reach a viable stage of development

How a Woman’s Eggs are Evaluated

  • Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) tests the quantity of a woman’s egg reserve
  • Ultrasound tests the quantity of a woman’s egg reserve
  • Other than IVF – egg retrieval and visual microscopic analysis in vitro – there is no method of testing the quality of a woman’s eggs
