What is the Best Fertility Treatment Option for Women With Low Quality Eggs?

pregnancy-doctor.jpgFailing an IVF attempt and being told that your poor quality eggs are the reason can cause many women to give up on their hope of pregnancy without the use of donor eggs. However, women with low-quality eggs have other options available to them outside of repeated failed attempts at Conventional IVF. Explore the best fertility treatment option for women with low-quality eggs below. Don’t despair if you are in your 30s or early 40s. Your quality eggs can still make a healthy baby. A woman is born with between 1 and 2 million eggs – however – she only releases 300 to 400 eggs through each natural ovulation cycle during her lifetime. Typically, a woman only releases one egg per month during her natural cycle. New Hope Fertility Center’s policy: It only takes one good quality egg to have a healthy baby.

Hope For Women With Low-Quality Eggs

Eggs of inferior quality may result from a variety of causes. From PCOS, to being in an advanced maternal years, infertility due to poor quality eggs can be overcome. One thing we know for sure is that aggressive stimulation protocols often reduce the quality of eggs even further. Since Conventional IVF is the standard treatment, many women with poor eggs are turned down or suffer repeated failure. Egg quality can sometimes be improved with medication. However, this would be based on a case by case basis and may not be an option for everyone. Stimulation-free IVF treatments, such as Natural Cycle IVF, have somewhat better success. The best treatment offered today is the Mini IVF. Mini IVF uses low levels of stimulation that don't reduce the quality of eggs, something women suffering from poor egg quality cannot afford to have happen.

Mini IVF And You

Mini IVF is a great choice for older women. Because advanced maternal age is directly related to the quality of eggs, there is little reason to choose otherwise. When your eggs are already of poor quality, time is often of the essence. Attempting to retrieve one egg at a time through Natural Cycle IVF may not always be ideal as the odds are already not in your favor. Mini IVF allows your body to gently produce three to five eggs of nearly the highest quality possible.

A few of the benefits of Mini IVF are:

  • Significantly cheaper medication cost compared to Conventional IVF
  • Gentle on your reproductive system
  • Reduces chance of pain or discomfort from aggressive stimulation
  • Little to no wait time between cycles
  • Minimized cancer and OHSS risk

It differs from Natural Cycle IVF in its use of a minimal amount of oral medication to stimulate the ovaries so they produce the maximum number of “quality” eggs in a single cycle. Three to five high quality eggs are ideal for developing a healthy baby. When more aggressive IVF drug treatments are used (like with conventional IVF), although more eggs are produced, those beyond 3-5 are typically not viable and are either discarded prior to implantation or are prone to failing in a later natural miscarriage.

In general, medication for the Mini-IVF™ treatment includes one Clomid pill consumed daily, no more than one to three injections of Menopur, and a simple nasal spray of Synarel or an equivalent medicine administered 36 hours prior to egg retrieval. Synarel avoids the need for repeated progesterone injections, which are typically used after the transfer step in conventional IVF. However, because we customize protocols to each individual patient, treatment may vary from case to case. We also have Ultra-Mini-IVF™ cycles that consists of only oral stimulation medications –usually 1-2 pills per day.

Mini-IVF™ minimizes the amount of chemicals and drugs used in fertility treatments. Mini-IVF™ may increase the chances of pregnancy and may provide surplus embryos to freeze for a later cycle.

Mini-IVF™ may be the right fit for you if you are looking to reduce health risks and discomfort caused by ovarian hyper stimulation (OHSS), to eliminate the pain of daily drug injections (which can be 20-60 per cycle), to reduce the high cost of drugs in conventional IVF protocols, to avoid the wait time of two to three months between cycles, and to minimize the potential risk of ovarian and endometrial cancer from prolonged use of high-dose IVF drugs.
