This week, New Hope Fertility Center would like to feature a special blog from acupuncturist Iris Netzer discussing Breast Cancer Awareness Month and how acupuncture can help both fertility and cancer treatments.
In 2015, an estimated 292,000+ cases of breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in the US—the most commonly diagnosed cancer among American women.
Although with early detection, and decreasing rates of fatality over the past two decades, the importance of acknowledging those who suffer from women’s health issues should, and will always be an important part of what I, and many other practitioners in this industry do and strive to champion.
With the hope of educating, supporting, and acknowledging those who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and are undergoing treatment, this month, and every month you endure pain, fatigue, and a broken spirit, we do this is for you.
In the many years I’ve been doing acupuncture, my main focus has always been to help women, especially those in their child-bearing years who have issues with fertility. Many breast cancer patients undergoing treatment often wonder how this affects their fertility—because in many cases it does. From amenorrhea due to chemotherapy treatments alongside the use of nausea-reducing drugs, fertility concerns are real and can be very trying to those going through treatment.
While much research is being done on how acupuncture can help relieve some of the symptoms of cancer and side effects of cancer treatment, it can certainly be beneficial in boosting fertility. Patients who undergo acupuncture treatment may see the potential effects of improved ovarian and follicular function. Additionally, acupuncture can increase blood flow to the endometrium, helping to facilitate a thick, rich lining. With just these few benefits in mind, there is certainly hope for women who have been affected by their cancer treatments.
In support of galvanizing discussions about breast cancer and women’s health awareness, let’s take the time to really get to know and understand our bodies, get yearly screenings, and do monthly checks—for womankind.
