Calculating Your Ovulation So You Know When The Time is Right

When you’re trying to conceive, timing is key. Using an ovulation calculator can make all the difference.  For women, fertility comes down to a single 24 hour window immediately following ovulation.  Identifying that window allows couples to time intercourse in order to get pregnant.

2015-26

Ovulation Window

Each woman has a unique menstrual cycle.  Normal cycles can range in duration from 22 to 36 days.   Despite this variance, women usually ovulate 14 days prior to the beginning of their next menstrual cycle.  For a woman with a 28 day cycle, ovulation occurs on day 14.  Women with a 36 day cycle would ovulate on day 22.

Fertility Window

A woman’s egg survives for 24 hours after ovulation unless it is fertilized.  Therefore, it is important to target intercourse to intercede with this window. A man’s sperm can survive in the body for five days, and sperm will “wait” for an egg to fertilize.  Timing intercourse to include the days prior to ovulation provides the best chance of getting pregnant.

Ovulation Calculator

An ovulation calculator is one of the most helpful tools to predict the most fertile days during your cycle.  Typically, ovulation calculators require the input of the following:

  • The first day of your menstrual period
  • The duration of your typical menstrual cycle

This information can be used to determine the best days to have intercourse in order to coordinate with ovulation.  Women with irregular cycles that vary in duration should use additional methods in order to identify their ideal window for targeting intercourse.

Other Tracking Methods

Charting your cycle provides another tool for determining the best time to have intercourse.  You should track changes in your body including:

  • Changes in cervical mucous
  • Location and openness of the cervix
  • Basal body temperature
  • Ovulation testing results

When used in combination with an ovulation calculator, women can identify the best time to try to conceive.
