Can Fertility Drugs Make Me Sick?

One of the many concerns of women facing fertility care is the effect fertility drugs can have on their bodies.  Fertility drugs are known for side effects and can have an impact on how a woman feels during her fertility treatment.

In addition to discomfort felt at the injection site, there are a number of side effects that are associated with fertility medication:

  • Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome
  • Ectopic pregnanciesfertility-specialist
  • Skin irritation
  • Headache
  • Mood swings
  • Ovarian twisting
  • Sleepiness
  • Dizziness
  • Vision problems
  • Weight gain
  • Breast tenderness

For those women who are looking to reduce or eliminate the need for fertility drugs, New Hope Fertility Center offers two options for IVF treatment using less medication.

Mini IVF – Mini IVF uses minimal fertility drugs to stimulate your ovaries to produce between three and five healthy eggs. The goal is to produce high quality eggs that are ready for fertilization and healthy pregnancy.

During Mini IVF:

  • Your cycle is monitored using blood work and sonogram
  • A minimal amount of fertility medication is administered
  • Once ready, your eggs are harvested under local anesthesia
  • The harvested eggs are fertilized in our lab
  • One embryo is transferred back into your uterus
  • Excess embryos are frozen to be used during future cycles

Natural IVF – Natural IVF uses no fertility medication.  Instead, we work with your natural fertility and harvest the one egg your body normally produces.  Natural IVF takes place over two cycles:

Cycle One:

  • Your body is monitored through blood work and ultrasound
  • When your body is ready, the egg naturally produced by your body is harvested
  • The harvested egg is fertilized and frozen

Cycle Two:

  • Your body is monitored through blood work and ultrasound
  • When your body is ready, the thawed embryo is transferred back into the mother’s womb.
  • We have experienced comparable results to that of traditional IVF.
