Is A Natural IVF Safer Than Other Infertility Treatments?

Traditionally, in vitro fertilization, or IVF, uses large quantities of fertility medication to stimulate your ovaries to produce a large number of eggs.  While IVF has been highly successful at treating infertility, there are some side effects when using large doses of fertility medication.  Natural IVF provides a more holistic approach to IVF treatment without the side effects experienced with Traditional IVF protocols.

What is Natural In Vitro Fertilization?

Natural in vitro fertilization uses no fertility medication.  Rather than stimulating your ovaries to produce multiple eggs with fertility medication, this more natural protocol harvests the one egg your body produces naturally.  A Natural IVF procedure is done over two cycles:

Cycle Oneegg-fertilization

  • Your cycle is monitored through blood work and ultrasound
  • Once the egg has matured, it is harvested just prior to ovulation
  • The egg is fertilized in our lab using donor or your partner’s sperm
  • The fertilized embryo is then either transferred into your uterus or frozen using vitrification and stored until your next cycle

Cycle Two (If recommended)

  • Your cycle is monitored through blood work and ultrasound
  • At the appropriate time in your cycle, the embryo is thawed and transferred directly into your uterus

What is Vitrification?

Vitrification is a state of the art way of flash freezing eggs and embryos.  The flash freezing process allows the temperature of the embryo to be brought to freezing an in an instant without the risk of damage from ice crystals.  Freezing embryos in this manner allows us to have high survival rates.  With traditional freezing methods, the survival rate for thawing embryos is 55% versus 98% with vitrification.  Therefore, this method of freezing is safer for your embryo.

Is Natural IVF Safer Than Traditional IVF?

Because there is no fertility medication there is virtually no risk of developing OHSS due to over stimulation.  Additionally, this protocol eliminates all of the side effects experienced with fertility medication.  Further, the retrieval process can be performed with less discomfort as there are fewer eggs to retrieve.
