Preconception Tips For Couples Trying To Get Pregnant

It is easy to become frustrated when trying to get pregnant.  This is especially true if you’ve been trying for a while without success, or if friends and family seem to be getting pregnant with no effort at all.  There are several things you can do to increase your chances of getting pregnant.

2015-39Birth Control

The first step in trying to get pregnant is to stop all forms of birth control.  The type of birth control you’ve been using determines how complicated this process is.  It is easy to stop using condoms.  If you’ve been using hormonal birth control, it may take some time for the hormones to clear your system and for your cycle to return to normal.

Overall Health

Your overall health plays a large role in your reproductive health.  When you decide to start a family, it is important that both partners see their doctor for a physical.  This way, any potential issues can be dealt with before they become problems.  You should begin taking prenatal vitamins during this time to prepare your body for pregnancy.  Increase your health by exercising regularly, eating well-balanced meals, and getting adequate rest.

Timed Intercourse

There is a small window of time during a woman’s cycle when she is able to become pregnant.  Once a woman ovulates, her egg is only able to survive for 24 hours.  Because of this, the best way to become pregnant is to time intercourse to coincide with ovulation.  For best results, you should aim to have intercourse in the days immediately before ovulation.  Sperm can survive for days inside of a woman’s body and can wait for an egg.

To track your cycle, you can use ovulation testers or basal body thermometers.  This way, you are able to identify when ovulation is imminent and when the best time to have intercourse is.
