Pros and Cons of IVF Treatment

Facing IVF to finally conceive a baby can be a very daunting prospect for couples. Although IVF significantly increases a couple’s chances of having a baby, it is a very physical and financial endeavor. IVF is today’s Go-To option for couples who have failed to conceive a pregnancy after undergoing a series of less complicated medical procedures, such as Timed Intercourse or Intrauterine Insemination (IUI).

Pros of IVF Treatment

As an alternative to the Conventional IVF, New Hope Fertility NYC offers holistic protocols. These holistic IVF protocols reduce the physical and financial tolls on couples trying to conceive.

Mini-IVF™ – only a minimal amount of fertility drugs are prescribed to produce a limited number of quality eggs – 3 to 5

Natural Cycle IVF™ – no fertility drugs are prescribed to stimulate egg production and the patient produces her one quality egg per monthly cycle

Other Ancillary Benefits of IVF

  • Circumvents reproductive medical conditions such as blocked Fallopian tubes
  • Helps to overcome male-factor infertility via Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)
  • Helps to prevent single gene disorders from being passed on to the child via in vitro embryo PGD testing
  • Permits in vitro embryo testing to detect chromosomal deficiencies – aneuploidy – an extra or missing chromosome through PGS/NGS testing
  • Allows couples to choose the sex of their child through gender selection of embryos developing in vitro
  • Allows couples to freeze their excess embryos for future Frozen Embryo Transfers (FET) to assist in cost-effective future family planning through embryo cryopreservation
  • Provides family planning options for the LGBTQ community through the use of donor eggs or donor sperm

IVF Cons

  • IVF is very expensive and is not 100 percent successful
  • IVF requires the injection of expensive fertility medications
  • IVF fertility medications cause discomfort
  • IVF fertility medications cause undesirable side effects
  • IVF cycles require several office visits to monitor the patient’s progress through ultrasound imaging and blood tests

IVF Procedure

The IVF procedure consists of approximately six steps, although the process may be modified with the doctor’s evidence-based recommended protocol:

  • Stimulation of the growth and development of multiple egg follicles within the ovaries using fertility drugs (FSH- follicle stimulating hormones), also known as controlled hyperstimulation of the ovaries
  • Monitoring of the growth of the egg follicles through regular ultrasounds and blood tests
  • Surgical removal of matured eggs from the follicles on the ovaries through technique known as aspiration
  • Fertilization of the eggs in a controlled laboratory setting through a technique known as Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)
  • Embryo culture in vitro for several days – allowing the embryos to grow and develop in the laboratory
  • Transfer of a predetermined number of quality embryos into the uterus using a catheter – similar to that of a Pap smear procedure
  • Progesterone is prescribed daily via suppository to help prepare the patient’s uterine lining for implantation of the fertilized egg – the embryo
  • A pregnancy test is scheduled on a date prescribed by the doctor through a blood draw
