How to Reduce the Risk of Multiple Births When Undergoing IVF Treatment

twin craddle.jpgIt used to be the sole standard practice of care to only prescribe large doses of fertility medication for women undergoing Conventional In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) . The goal of Conventional IVF has been for the woman to develop multiple egg follicles - 10+ - in order to create several quality embryos in vitro. Through Conventional IVF, it was typical to transfer more than one embryo and multiple pregnancies were common.  No longer is this the only standard practice of care for IVF to be successful. Introducing: Mini-IVF and Natural Cycle IVF - two innovative technologies reducing the risk of multiple pregnancy for women undergoing In Vitro Fertilization.

Current research proves that transferring multiple embryos does not increase IVF pregnancy rates. What it does do is increase the likelihood of having high risk pregnancies as a result of multiples.

Reducing the Risk of In Vitro Fertilization Multiple Pregnancies

Multiple pregnancies carry an inherently higher risk than their counterpart singleton pregnancies. Why is this important? A multiple pregnancy can have serious health impacts for the babies, as well as moms.

Risks of multiple pregnancies include:

  • Going into labor before full term and delivering premature babies
  • Having babies with a low birth weight
  • Having babies who experience intrauterine growth restriction (IGR)
  • Experiencing pregnancy loss
  • Developing preeclampsia
  • Developing gestational diabetes

The risks above increase with the number of multiples. For example, the risk of having triplets is significantly higher than the risk of having twins. While having a multiple pregnancy does not automatically mean the mom will experience pregnancy complications, it significantly increases the risk.

Single Embryo Transfer

Single embryo transfer through Mini-IVF or Natural Cycle IVF treatment is the best way to reduce the likelihood of having a multiple pregnancy. Transferring a single embryo does not decrease pregnancy rates. When high quality embryos are selected and transferred, pregnancy rates increase even when a single embryo is transferred.
