When people hear of fertility treatments, they often think of IVF. However, many individuals can be treated for fertility issues with less invasive methods such as timed intercourse and IUI. These procedures can be effective in helping couples get pregnant without the financial, physical or emotional cost of IVF.
The secret to becoming pregnant is to time intercourse with a woman’s ovulation. Although men can produce sperm every day, a woman only ovulates once per cycle. The egg that woman produces during her cycle is only viable and available for fertilization for 24 hours. Getting pregnant boils down to ensuring sperm are present when a woman ovulates. Monitored timed intercourse helps couples achieve this goal. The process uses blood work and ultrasound to monitor a woman’s cycle and to determine when ovulation will occur. It may be done with or without the use of fertility medication, depending on each woman’s specific needs. Once ovulation is imminent, a couple is instructed to have intercourse. Targeting a woman’s fertile window is the best way to become pregnant through intercourse.
Intrauterine insemination, often referred to as IUI takes timing intercourse a step further. Rather than simply providing guidelines for when to have intercourse, the fertility care team takes a more active role with IUI. During IUI, the male partner provides a semen sample. That sample is then prepared in order to ensure the healthiest sperm are placed into the female partner. Using a catheter and a thin tube, the prepared sperm is inserted directly into a woman’s uterus in tandem with ovulation. This decreases the distance sperm has to travel and increases success rates. Like timed intercourse, IUI may be done with or without the use of fertility medication.
Candidates for Timed Intercourse and IUI
Many couples can benefit from the use of timed intercourse or IUI. In order to use these treatment methods a woman must have open fallopian tubes. Additionally, the male partner must have sufficient sperm quality and quantity where fertilization can occur without the use of ICSI, a manual method of fertilizing eggs.
