A woman is most fertile during her twenties through age 35. In today’s society, many women aren’t ready to start their families during those years. Other women must delay motherhood due to other medical issues. These women may wonder “does it make sense to freeze my eggs?” Fertility preservation through egg freezing, also known as banking, is a great way to ensure you will have healthy eggs available once you are ready for children.
Why should I freeze my eggs?
Your age plays a large role in your natural fertility. Your eggs are of the best quality during your twenties to 35. Freezing your eggs allows you to have use your highest quality eggs when you’re ready for them. This preserves your fertility until you are ready to have children. There is no age limit to freezing your eggs, if your body is still capable of ovulation, you may be a candidate for egg banking.
What’s the process to freeze my eggs?
We use cutting edge technology to freeze your eggs. Vitrification is a way of flash freezing your eggs so that they will not be damaged by ice crystals. The formation of ice crystals can be extremely damaging to eggs and account for a significant portion of the eggs that do not survive the freezing and thawing process. Vitrification eliminates this problem. During vitrification:
- Once harvested, your eggs are examined for viability
- Eggs that are found suitable for fertilization are selected for freezing
- A cryoprotectant is added to the eggs and water is removed, preventing the formation of ice crystals
- The eggs are instantly frozen then stored in our state of the art laboratory
When you’re ready, the process is reversed. The protectant is removed from the egg and water is added back to the egg. The thawed egg is then ready for fertilization.
