Why You Should Consider a Mini IVF if You're Over 40

Naturally, a woman is most fertile from her teenage years until age 35.  After that point, a woman’s natural fertility decreases significantly.  This decrease does not mean that becoming pregnant is an impossibility.  In fact, New Hope Fertility Center has an IVF protocol, Mini-IVF™, which is ideal for women over 40.

blog12What is IVF?

IVF or in vitro fertilization has been successfully used for decades to help couples achieve their dreams of parenthood.  Traditionally, IVF treatment uses high doses of fertility medication to stimulate a woman’s ovaries to mature multiple eggs.  Once mature, the eggs are harvested in an outpatient procedure.  The eggs are then fertilized in a laboratory and the resulting embryos are either implanted in the mother’s uterus or stored for use during a future cycle.

What is Mini-IVF™?

Created by the fertility experts at New Hope, Mini IVF uses a minimal amount of fertility medication to gently stimulate a woman’s ovaries to produce between three and five high quality eggs.  Mini-IVF™ protocols are safer and have significantly less side effects than their traditional counterparts.  The amount of fertility medication prescribed varies based on each woman’s unique needs.  During a minimal stimulation cycle, you may receive:

  • Clomid taken orally
  • Between one and three injections of Menopur
  • Synarel nasal spray

Further, we offer an Ultra-Mini-IVF™ cycle that uses only oral fertility medication should that protocol better suit our patient’s needs.

Why Mini IVF is Ideal for Women Over 40

Mini in vitro fertilization is suited for women who are concerned with the quality vs. the quantity of eggs produced during a cycle.  Eggs produced during a minimal stimulation protocol are healthier and are better suited for fertilization.  Additionally, the minimal stimulation protocol eliminates the need for the waiting period between IVF cycles.
